Lithium Battery Maintenance: Extending Battery Life

Lithium Battery Maintenance: Extending Battery Life

Prohibition on Using Lead-Acid Chargers for Lithium Batteries
For common 48V and 72V electrical systems, the full charge voltages of lead-acid and lithium batteries are different, and their charging logic is also not the same. Using the wrong type of charger may, at best, prevent the battery from reaching a full charge, and at worst, cause permanent damage to the battery.

Avoid Charging Immediately After Parking
When you stop, the battery may still be hot. It is best to let it rest for 30 minutes before charging. If the vehicle has been discharging at a high current for an extended period, or is operating in a high-temperature environment, the battery temperature can rise quickly. If the battery feels noticeably hot or scalding to the touch (above 40°C), charging it in this state can easily cause permanent cell aging and a rapid decline in range.

Recommended Charging Practices for Lithium Batteries
It is advisable to charge when the remaining battery level is between 30% and 50%, and to stop charging when it reaches around 90%.

Optimal Daily Charge Range
For daily use, the best charge range for a lithium battery is 20%–90%. Try to avoid charging when the battery is below 10%. Never allow the battery to run until it automatically shuts off. Repeatedly discharging to 0% can cut battery life in half. Shallow charge and shallow discharge cycles yield the longest battery life.

Long-Term Storage
For long-term storage, keep the battery charge between 50% and 60%, store it in a dry, cool place, and recharge it every 1–2 months. Storing at full charge can damage the battery, while storing it fully discharged may cause it to become permanently unusable (“starve” to death).

Winter Use Precautions
Do not charge the battery when the temperature is below 0°C, as charging below freezing can cause permanent damage. Whenever possible, charge indoors or in environments above 5°C, or use a battery with built-in heating functionality.

Reminder:
“Maintenance-free” for lithium batteries does not mean “no care required.” Use the right methods, and a lithium battery can last ten years.
